nPlay

Video player that finds, fixes and translates subtitles

Plays any video, finds its subtitles by itself, lines them up with the speech and translates them on your own computer — and writes them from the speech when a film has none.

Download for Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Unzip, then start nplay.exe. The first time, Windows may say it protected your PC: choose More info, then Run anyway — nPlay is not signed with a Windows certificate yet.

Download for Mac

macOS 13.3 or newer on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later). Unzip and drag nPlay to Applications. The first time, macOS stops it: in System Settings → Privacy & Security, choose Open Anyway.

nPlay

nPlay is a desktop video player built around subtitles. A video opens on its own preparation screen and plays once its subtitles are ready: nPlay finds or writes them, translates them and lines them up with the speech, each step shown with its progress. It looks for subtitles in the file itself, in files beside it, in its own saved copies and on the subtitle sites you connect, cheapest first. Subtitles from another release are lined up with where people actually speak, including the stretch between 25 and 23.976 frames a second, and subtitles that belong to a different film are refused rather than "fixed". Translation into about 80 languages, Sinhala and Tamil included, runs on your computer with an open model you download once, so nothing you watch leaves it, and both languages can be shown at once. When a film has no subtitles anywhere, nPlay writes them from its speech, also on your computer. Click any word for its meaning and save it to My words.

Anyone who watches films and series in a language they are still learning, or wants subtitles in their own language — Sinhala and Tamil included.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), macOS 13.3 or newer on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later), or 64-bit Linux with GTK 3 and libmpv
  • On Windows, the free Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (already in Windows 11) for the sign-in; on Linux, WebKitGTK (Debian and Ubuntu: sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0)
  • On Windows and Linux, a processor with AVX2 (Intel from 2013 on, every AMD Ryzen)
  • 8 GB of memory recommended for translating and writing subtitles
  • Disk space for the models you choose: from 60 MB (the smallest speech model) to about 2 GB (the translation model)
  • Internet to sign in, to check a monthly or yearly plan on its payment day, to download models and to search the subtitle sites — playing, translating and writing subtitles work offline
  • Your own free account or key for each subtitle site you want to use (optional)

What it does

Plays everything

Every format mpv plays, with hardware decoding: folders and playlists, resume where you stopped, speed, audio tracks, screenshots, a mini player that stays on top, full screen and keyboard keys.

Finds subtitles by itself

Tracks inside the file (MKV, MP4), files next to the video and its own saved copies first, then OpenSubtitles, SubDL, SubSource, Gestdown and Jimaku with your own keys.

Fixes the timing

Lines subtitles up with where people speak, including frame-rate stretches, and refuses to "fix" subtitles that belong to another film.

Translates on your computer

About 80 languages, Sinhala and Tamil included, with the MADLAD-400 model running on your own computer. Both languages can be shown at once.

Writes subtitles from speech

When none exist anywhere, the Whisper speech model writes them from the film’s sound, starting where you are watching.

Words and picture subtitles

Click any word for its meaning and save it to My words; a click there plays that moment again. Blu-ray picture subtitles are read with OCR.

Organises your films

Once the subtitles are ready, each film moves into its own folder in your Movies or TV Series folder, named after the film and its year, with every subtitle file and the real poster, the way Jellyfin, Plex and Kodi read it. It asks when it is not sure which film it is, and Undo puts everything back. A queue prepares many films one after another, overnight.

Setting it up

  1. Download

Pick the download for your computer above. Each one is the whole player, with its three engines inside.

  2. Unpack and start

Windows: unzip and start nplay.exe. Mac: unzip and drag nPlay to Applications. Linux: unpack and run ./nplay. The note under each download says what the first start asks.

  3. Sign in

The Nugezza ID sign-in is the first thing you see: sign in or create your account. Your 30 free days start by themselves, with everything. No card is needed.

  4. Download the models

Open Models, let nPlay test your computer, and press Download: it fetches the speech, voice and translation models that suit it, each one checked before it is used.

  5. Connect subtitle sites (optional)

In Accounts, add your own free OpenSubtitles, SubDL, SubSource or Jimaku key. Gestdown needs none.

  6. Keep it

Choose a plan on this page whenever you like, and nPlay carries on by itself.

Licensing

A free 30-day trial, then 2.99 euro a month, 19.99 euro a year, or 39.99 euro once to keep it for good. A monthly or yearly plan works until its next payment, offline too. On that day nPlay needs the internet to check the payment, then carries on by itself until the next one. Bought once, it works offline for good. One licence covers one computer. You can cancel a subscription at any time. To move your licence to a new computer, ask us in the chat. Versions before 0.3 keep working as they are. nPlay is made only from open-source parts — Flutter, mpv, whisper.cpp, llama.cpp and Tesseract — and every model it downloads has an open licence.

If something goes wrong

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”
nPlay is not signed with a Windows certificate yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
The Mac says nPlay cannot be opened
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, choose Open Anyway next to nPlay, then open it again.
On Linux nothing happens, or it says libmpv.so.2 is missing
Install libmpv: sudo apt install libmpv2 (Debian 12, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer). Start ./nplay from a terminal to see what it says.
Models says an engine is not part of this build
The package is incomplete: download it again from this page. If it stays, tell us in the chat which computer you use.
The sign-in does not appear, and nPlay says it needs WebView2 or WebKitGTK
Install what it names: on Windows the free Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, on Debian and Ubuntu sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0. Then choose Try again.
nPlay says it is waiting for your next payment
Connect to the internet. Once the payment has gone through, nPlay opens by itself. If it stays closed, check your plan in your account on this website.
nPlay says the licence is in use on another computer
A licence is for one computer. Ask us in the chat on this website to move it.

Questions

What does it cost?
The first 30 days are free, with no card needed. Then 2.99 euro a month, 19.99 euro a year, or 39.99 euro once to keep it for good.
Does what I watch leave my computer?
No. Playing, translating and writing subtitles all happen on your computer. Searching a subtitle site you connected sends that site the film’s name and a fingerprint of the file, never the film.
Which languages are its screens in?
English, Sinhala and Italian.
What happens after 30 days, or if a subscription ends?
nPlay stops opening until you buy it or subscribe again. Your films, subtitles and saved words are not touched, and paying brings everything back.
I already have an older version. Does it stop working?
No. Versions before 0.3 keep working as they are, with no account. Newer versions need Nugezza ID.
