Caller ID

Caller-ID pop-up for your shop line

When your shop phone rings, the customer's details appear instantly — fully offline.

Download for Android

Caller ID

Caller ID (Nugezza Caller ID) is a standalone Android app for a shop's landline. A small USB caller-ID modem is tapped onto the phone line and plugged into an Android tablet; when the line rings, the app reads the incoming number, looks it up in its on-device customer database, and pops the caller's saved record — name, address, delivery notes and recent orders — so staff can take the order faster. Everything runs 100% offline: customer data never leaves the tablet and the app does not use the internet. You keep answering and talking on your normal telephone; the tablet is a display and order book only.

Shop owners and counter staff who take phone orders on a landline (pizzerias, takeaways, delis, small retail).

What you need

  • Android tablet or phone running Android 8.0 (Oreo) or newer with USB-OTG / host mode
  • USB caller-ID modem such as StarTech USB56KEMH2 (Conexant CX93010, CDC-ACM)
  • Powered USB-OTG hub recommended, to power the modem and keep the tablet charged
  • Shop landline into the modem's LINE jack; telephone into PHONE (RJ11 splitter works too)
  • A license key from your supplier, or the built-in 30-day trial
  • No internet connection required

What it does

Instant caller pop-up

When the landline rings, the incoming number is matched to your customers and the record appears automatically. Unknown numbers show an 'Add as customer' shortcut; private/withheld numbers are shown as 'Private number'.

On-device customer database

Each customer holds a full name, one or more phone numbers (each with a label), address, postcode, city, delivery instructions, email, notes, tags, balance and birthday — plus a list of orders.

5 interface layouts

Choose the home screen that suits your counter: Classic (list with keypad), Modern (large cards with avatars), Keypad (phone dialer), Smart search (centered minimal search) and POS grid (touch tiles).

4 languages

Italian, English, Spanish and French, switchable in Settings; the whole app re-localizes instantly.

Configurable customer-sheet and call styles

Pick how a record opens when tapped (full page, center popup, fullscreen, or a side/top/bottom panel) and how an incoming call is shown (automatic, full record, center card, phone screen, top banner or bold).

Orders and balance

Add, edit and delete orders on a customer's record, with an auto-numbered description and running balance you can adjust.

Backup, restore and CSV

Export a full JSON backup of customers and orders, restore from one, import customers from a CSV, or export customers to CSV.

Offline licensing

Access is unlocked by an offline license key — 30-day trial, 1 year, or lifetime — pasted or scanned as a QR code. No account or internet needed.

Kiosk-friendly

Runs full-screen with the screen kept awake, and listens for calls in the background via a foreground service.

Built-in diagnostics

A diagnostics screen shows modem status, lets you switch caller-ID modes, simulate a call, and share a log to troubleshoot.

Setting it up

  1. Install the app

Install the Caller ID APK on the tablet and open it.

  2. Accept the agreement

On first launch, review and Accept the license agreement, privacy notice and terms to continue (Reject closes the app).

  3. Activate a license

On the Activate license screen, note the Device code shown. Either paste a license key and tap Activate, or tap Scan QR to read a license QR code. A 30-day trial, 1-year or lifetime key all work the same way.

  4. Connect the modem

Plug the USB caller-ID modem into the tablet (ideally through a powered USB-OTG hub), and connect the phone line to the modem's LINE jack and your telephone to PHONE. Approve the USB device prompt if Android asks. The app starts listening automatically.

  5. Check the modem is ready

Go to Settings > Modem and diagnostics > Open diagnostics and confirm Modem status shows it is ready and listening.

  6. Add your customers

Go to Settings > Manage customers to add customers by hand or import them from a CSV file. You can also load demo data from Diagnostics to try the app first.

  7. Pick your look

In Settings, choose your Interface (layout), Appearance (theme), Language, Customer sheet style and Incoming call style.

  8. Test a call

In Diagnostics, type a number you saved and tap Simulate to confirm the pop-up appears — or ring the shop line from a mobile.

  5. Tap Share log to send the diagnostics log to your supplier

Licensing

Access is controlled by an offline license — no account or internet needed. Three tiers exist: Trial (30 days), 1 year (365 days), and Lifetime (no expiry). Each app install shows a unique Device code; you give that code to your supplier, who issues a key tied to that device. Activate by pasting the key on the Activate license screen and tapping Activate, or by tapping Scan QR to read a license QR code. Settings shows the active tier and expiry date. A key made for another device is rejected ('Key for another device'), and setting the tablet's clock incorrectly is detected ('Invalid device date'). When a license expires, the app locks until you enter a new key; contact your supplier to renew.

If something goes wrong

The pop-up never appears when the phone rings
Open Diagnostics and check Modem status. If it says the modem is not connected, reseat the USB modem (use a powered OTG hub) and approve the USB prompt. Confirm the phone line is in the modem's LINE jack.
A call is detected but the number is missing or scrambled
In Diagnostics, try the other Caller-ID mode buttons (FSK, DTMF, Bellcore, RAW). Italian lines usually use FSK; switch modes until a clean number appears in the real-time log.
A known customer shows as 'Customer not found'
The stored number may not match the incoming format. Open the customer and make sure the phone number is saved correctly; add the alternate number if the line sends it differently.
'Private number' or 'Unknown' is shown
The caller withheld their number or it isn't in your database. For unknown numbers, tap Add as customer to save them for next time; withheld numbers cannot be identified.
'This key is for another device' on activation
The license key was generated for a different Device code. Send your current Device code (shown on the activation screen and in Settings) to your supplier and request a matching key.
'The device date is invalid' on activation
The tablet's clock is wrong or was changed. Set the correct date and time on the tablet, then try activating again.
CSV import skipped rows
Ensure the first row is a header and uses the accepted column names (name, phone, phone2, address, postalcode, city, email, notes, tags). Rows without a usable name or number are skipped.
Restore replaced my data unexpectedly
Restore always replaces all current customers and orders — that is by design and is confirmed before it runs. Keep a fresh Export backup before restoring so you can revert.

Questions

Does the app need the internet?
No. It works fully offline — customer data stays on the tablet and is never sent over the internet. The app doesn't even request internet permission.
Do I answer calls through the app?
No. You keep answering and talking on your normal telephone. The tablet only displays who is calling and stores your customers and orders.
What hardware do I need?
An Android 8.0+ tablet with USB-OTG, a USB caller-ID modem (e.g. StarTech USB56KEMH2), and ideally a powered USB-OTG hub. The phone line goes into the modem's LINE jack and your telephone into PHONE.
Can I try it before buying a license?
Yes. There's a 30-day free trial, then 1-year or lifetime licenses. You activate any of them by pasting a key or scanning a QR code.
What happens to my data if I reinstall or move to a new tablet?
Use Export backup to save a JSON file, then Restore backup on the other device. Note that a license key is tied to a device, so a new tablet needs a new key from your supplier.
Can staff accidentally change my customer list?
Adding, editing and importing live in the separate Manage customers area in Settings, so day-to-day use is mostly viewing. The home screens are for looking customers up.
Which languages are supported?
Italian, English, Spanish and French, switchable at any time in Settings.
