About the game

Sunil was only trying to catch a homeless cat by the fish stall. Then someone shouted “Ali gahano!” — the elephants are coming — and everyone ran. Now the tusker leading the herd is right behind you.

Run through the town, the village lanes and the paddy fields, across the Malwathu Oya on a plank bridge and over the old iron bridge, down the railway line, through the jungle and along the tank bund. Everyone shouts in Sinhala: “Ado!”, “Ammo!”, “Paren ain weyan!”

A Sri Lankan road

Tuk-tuks that suddenly U-turn across the road, cars that crawl, the bread lorry playing its tune, crazy buses roaring up behind you, oncoming trains, and cows, goats, boars, peacocks and a kabaragoya crossing the road.

Wild elephants

The herd chases you all the way: stumble and the tusker is on your heels. Roadside elephants push trees across your path — jump the trunk, or duck under the one caught high.

Helpers

Grab a fish from the fish stall for the cat, and it fetches coins and chases off dogs and goats. Hand fireworks to the villagers and the herd runs back. Hop on a mate’s motorbike for a fast ride, or drink a king coconut to shrug off a crash.

Fair and tested

Every stretch of road is checked before you see it: a careful player steering by tilt can always get through. Before each release, reference players run kilometres of road on many different runs, and one that does nothing must be caught.

Questions

Where can I get Ali Gahano?
Ali Gahano is coming soon to Google Play, App Store and Microsoft Store. This page links to each store the day the game is there.
Is Ali Gahano really free?
Yes. There are no ads and no in-app purchases. Coins are earned by running and spent in the game’s own shop on new runners and stronger helpers; nothing is sold for money.
Do I need the internet to play?
No. Ali Gahano plays completely offline. The Android version does not even ask for internet access.
Why does it use my phone’s motion sensor?
Only to steer, if you choose to tilt: the game reads which way down is while you play and moves the runner. Nothing about your movements is kept or sent anywhere. You can swipe instead in Settings.
Where is my progress kept?
Only on your device: your best distance, your coins, what you have bought and your settings. We never see it. Uninstalling the game deletes it; on Android, your phone’s own Google backup may bring it back on a new phone.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Cartoon elephants chase you and, if they catch you, lift you up in the air — no one is hurt. No chat, no account, no ads, and nothing about anyone is collected.
Which languages is it in?
Sinhala first, with Sinhala voices for every shout, and English. You can switch between them in Settings.
